Dental Exams and X-Rays Performed by Your Falls Church General Dentist
Typically following your dental cleaning by one of our hygienists will be your dental exam. These exams are just as crucial as the cleanings when it comes to maintaining good oral health. By receiving an exam every 6 months, you could be saving yourself money and other potential hardships that could develop later on. At the twice-yearly interval, most dental issues can be caught and treated at an early stage.
How it's done:
Dr. Peyser will first examine your mouth visually using high-intensity lights, mirrors, and assorted dental tools. He will be looking for things such as:
• Tooth decay or cracks in the teeth.
• Oral cancer indicators in the mouth, neck, gums and surrounding areas.
• Gum disease in the tissue and bones of the jaw.
• Defects in current restorations, such as crowns, fillings, etc.
Your medical and dental history will also be evaluated and discussed with the doctor.
Following the visual examination, diagnostic x-rays will be taken in order to help reveal any issues that may be "hidden" to the naked eye, especially like those below the gum line. Bitewing x-rays are typically taken every 12 months and a panographic x-ray, a whole-head-surrounding x-ray is taken every 3-5 years.
